Starting 2017

First for those who do not know me well, I am within a week of my 60th birthday. I'm in reasonably good health. My cholesterol is a little high. I am around 37 ponds over weight (at 162lbs) for my 5'2" frame. I love sweets and I am an emotion/stress eater.  I have not been a real good exerciser in the last 35+  years. I hate to get sweaty. I have alway even able to do pretty much whatever I have wanted physically, but as you probably can guess, I am not a big athlete or involved in many sport type things. I do want to live a long healthy life though and it has finally been brought home to me, that I should have started a long time ago. In the last few years I have noticed that I get short on breath much easier and I am not nearly as flexible as I was just a short time ago. So now is the time to start improving my health.

For 14 year I was a licensed and nationally certified massage therapist. After several months of going back and forth, this December of 2016, I let my verification lapse. I am not giving massage for money and did not feel the requirements and money every two year, was right for me anymore.

I also was certified as a personal trainer and nutritional adviser about 15 years ago, but did it only for my own education and have not made a career of it, but do have some background studying in health and nutrition. I would not class myself as an expert by any means, but this year I am setting out to plan to improve my health in all of it facets.

This blog will be dedicated to the information, thoughts, and feelings I have while doing this years exploring of health as I find it.

So here are my first basics;
If I want to lose weight, I must take in less calories than I expend in each day. To maintain weight, I must have a fairly equal intake and outgo of calories. Finally to gain weight,  more calories need to be taken in than are expended. Now saying that, I need to remember not all calories are created equal and the right mix of nutrition is as important as the amount. In the next little while I am planning on making a chart of the major vitamins and mineral most bodies need to be in their best shape. Also I want to include the best foods for each of the vitamins and mineral I spotlight. Then I plan to figure out what seems to be major powerhouse foods, that give the most bang for the calories.

If I want to stay in the healthiest shape I can, I believe I have to have your body in good shape. That will mean the all three physical areas I consider most important for a healthy body are addressed. cardo, strength, and flexibility. As I am not a great exerciser, I will try different things and write down what works for me.

Another extremely important area for health, in my opinion, is sleep. As I find that I have trouble getting enough sleep and good quality sleep, this is another I will be delving into. I will be cataloging what I try and what works well for me.

Emotional health is also important as it can help or harm our efforts. I am a great one for sabotaging myself, so as I find thing that help me. I will include them here also.

This next is just my opinion, but I think some form or spirituality or practice of gratefulness can benefit me. I will be exploring this also.

I will also be putting some quick and nutritious recipes together, as I try them, as well as some on the go snacks and make ahead meals; exercise routines and easy to do ways to fit in strength training. And other things as they come to mind.

As with any blog, these are my opinions and finding as I research. I will do my best to have accurate info here, but I am only human.

hope you can find things that you find helpful here.

What is right for you?

As I read article after article, it is so easy to get confused on what is the best way to eat, exercise, think, relax, and in general be healthier. I am finding it harder to believe what I read or even what the doctors tell me. They so often contradict each other or even themselves. I have decided that it is truly up to me to decide what is best for me. Everyone has advice for me, but some times i find that two doctors will say totally different things. And heaven knows reading articles in books, magazines, or on the internet will lead you to all most always finding opposite views and research, so it is hard to know what to trust. I have decided that I will trust myself most. I am the one living in this body. Next I will trust test that tell me what my actual amounts of things in my body are, not just ones that indicate that there might be a problem maybe. Doctors are people too and not gods, so I will listen to their advice, but understand that I have read more" cutting edge...

Snack and Nibbles

Since I previous said that I feel that eating 5 pr 6 times a day is a healthy way to go, at least for me. I figures putting in some snack options might might help and yet not overload you on calories. Here are a few 50 calorie snack options, this is my no means all to them:  1. 1 1/2 T Hummus ans 1/2 small red pepper sliced for dipping 2. 1 T soft goat cheese and one celery stalk 3. 10 baby carrots with 2T salsa for dipping 4.   1⁄2 cup strawberries with 21⁄2 Tbsp nonfat yogurt   5. 14 grapes 6. 3/4 C fresh raspberries 7. 12 cherries 8. 1⁄2 medium apple, baked, topped with 1 Tbsp lowfat yogurt sprinkled with cinnamon 9. 1⁄2 small banana 10. 4 oz unsweetened applesauce sprinkled with cinnamon  11. 1 1⁄2 cups salted air-popped popcorn 12. 1⁄4 cup shelled edamame with sea salt 13. 8 oz miso soup 14. 1 medium sliced cucumber mixed with 1⁄4 cup sliced onion, 1⁄2 cup chopped celery, 4 Tbsp vinegar and salt to taste 15.  1 1⁄2 cups sugar snap peas...

Move it

the old saying, move it or lose it is so true. Eating is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but only a part. No one piece will give you the best health possible. So on to step two. Make sure that what ever you do as exercise, your body can handle it. I have made the mistakes in the past of wanting it all now and pushing to hard. If you do this, you might get results faster, but more than likely you will over tax your body causing injury, pain, and frustration. Take it slow and give your body a chance to grow and develop into a healthy fit body. If you have any questions on what you should do or where to start,  you might want to check with your doctor.  Remember for muscles and soft tissue to get stronger it takes a week to two, for your joints (tendon and ligaments) to get stronger it takes two to three weeks, for your bones to start to build it takes four weeks or more. This means that you need to be aware of you whole body, not just your muscles, heart, and lungs. ...
